What's the one skill all successful people have in common? What skill is the greatest predictor of your success?
And I mean success in every sense of the word. Most people think of financial achievement when they think success. That's important but I don't count people as overall successful just because they make a lot of money.
When I say successful, I mean someone who is achieving their potential, someone who is generally happy and who is living and creating the life they want.
What all successful people have in common is the ability to communicate well.
The greatest predictor of your success is your ability to communicate.
And communication is not just about words. Words only account for about 20% to 30% of your communication. I didn't conduct a double blind placebo test to come up with that percentage but I think it's fairly accurate and a good assumption to make that will serve you well.
In NLP we presuppose that you cannot not communicate. You're always communicating even when you're not saying a word.
We communicate with tonality. Think of how many ways you can say the same, simple sentence changing it's meaning every time just by changing your tonality.
And there's body language, eye movements, breathing, skin tone changes, etc.
All of this is communication and if you treat it as just as important as the words someone is telling you, be prepared to learn so much more about yourself and other people.
You may be thinking you already know how to communicate. What else is there to do?
Are you getting what you want? Do you feel understood by others? Do you feel connected with others?
Maybe you do already, but you probably want more of these things.
Why are great communicators successful? Many reasons.
They can articulate goals, values, and their vision clearly. People are drawn to clarity in others just like they're drawn to confidence.
The better you can illustrate your ideas the better you can lead others to help you actualize them.
Great communicators know what they want. Not only are they able to articulate their ideas clearly, they work at getting clear about their ideas first, then they work at translating them so that others can understand them.
Don't underestimate the power of being understood. We crave being understood because it makes us feel supported and connected to the people who understand us. When you feel connected with them, they will feel connected to you. And now you have charisma and magnetism.
If better communication is just a goal, you're selling yourself short.
Decide right now to become a better communicator and decide to make it a lifelong practice.
How?
Experiment with different forms of communication; communicating with different people, in different places, with different mediums.
I've spent several years writing everyday to help me get clarity about my ideas and also to share ideas with others like I'm doing right now.
I went to film school and learned how to create visually and I do that regularly with the videos I create for Youtube.
Joining Toastmasters to learn the craft of public speaking opened up a completely different way of communicating.
Here's the thing to remember, you don't have to master each of these forms to become a greater communicator. Just spend time learning each one. Some will be more interesting than others. Go with it and when you lose interest in that one, switch to another one.
Gradually you will cultivate a multidimensional communication skillset. It's almost like thinking and speaking in different languages.
And of course (you probably saw this coming), learn NLP!
NLP is a communication model. It will help you get clear about your ideas, your desires, your values, and your outcomes.
Language models like the Meta Model and the Milton Model will help you understand language like never before and how to implement the patterns in these models for greater communication with others and for understanding yourself better.
Sensory acuity and calibration are foundational NLP skills, which unfortunately most NLP students don't take the time to learn because it takes practice. But when you practice sensory acuity and calibration, what you're doing is tuning your senses to receive nonverbal communication people are giving you.
When you're able to do this you will have greater influence, and you will be able to read people and situations rapidly. You will also have greater awareness of what you're communicating to others nonverbally, which their unconscious is picking up.
Cultivate your communication skills and you will be more successful in anything you want to do.
