Perhaps the most popular and widely known NLP process, the Swish Pattern, is both simple and extremely effective for creating behavioral change.

Why?

Most people don't know this about the pattern, but it actually works at the identity level when it's done right.

"How do I know if I'm doing it right Damon?"

Glad you asked. That's exactly what my latest video is about. You can check it out here.

The Swish Pattern was the process that inspired legendary NLPer -and mentor to me for several years- the late Steve Andreas to create the most powerful NLP model, which is the Self-Concept Model.

If you're interested in learning this model I will be opening enrollment for it in early November. It's called Transforming Your Self.

The Swish pattern uses an image of your ideal self to break the pattern of behavior you no longer want like overeating, nail-biting, smoking, etc. and guide you toward becoming the best version of yourself.

You've heard that "the devil is in the details". Well actually this works the opposite way. The key to the Swish Pattern is generalization and how to generalize your ideal self across all contexts and all behavior.

Nothing is more powerful than this.

So when you create an ideal image of yourself and then Swish it up as you swish down the image that triggers the unwanted behavior, suddenly you have this compelling image of yourself that gives you a vision of where you want to go instead of engaging in the unwanted behavior.

The best part is that this ideal image of yourself is not in any particular context and the image of yourself is not engaging in any particular behavior. This is what makes it so powerful.

Because context and behavior are missing, you will tend to generalize this ideal version of yourself across all contexts and you'll have access to all behaviors that would serve you in whatever situation you find yourself in.

This is how your identity works, which is also a generalization. Your identity or self-concept is a generalization that generalizes through space and time.

When you travel to another part of the world, for example, you still have the same sense of self. The new context does not make you feel like a different person. You still feel a connection with the you who got on a plane hours before.

The same goes for time. When you think of yourself in the past and you think of yourself in the future, you're still connected to a sense of self that no longer exists (your past self) and you still feel connected to a self that does not exist yet (your future self).

If you haven't tried the Swish Pattern yet, give it a try and let me know what your results are.

If you have tried it before, let me know what your experiences have been.
