Are You Down With the L in NLP?

The ability to persuade, overcome objections, and negotiate outlandish deals in your favor is what attracts many people to NLP. Unfortunately though when you take NLP trainings very little emphasis is given to the L in NLP. The truth is there aren't many trainers, even highly skilled and world renowned trainers, who can apply language patterns in everyday situations effectively. It is like learning a new language. You can memorize words and patterns but when it's time to use them we get stuck and we don't get that sale, or we lose an argument or we don't get the phone number. I wish I could tell you there's a shortcut, but there isn't. It takes the kind of practice most aren't willing to dedicate to it. The good news though is it can be fun. The easiest and fastest way to learn language patterns I've found is through flashcards. You can also use the technique of "ghosting" when you practice with flashcards. It takes three people to do this. Two people engage in conversation. One has a clear intent to persuade the other person to do something specific. The more specific your intent the better. The person who is being persuaded comes up with objections. Person three stands behind the Objector and holds up flashcards with different language patterns on it either from the Milton Model or Sleight of Mouth so the Persuader can see them but the Objector cannot. The Persuader must use each pattern person three holds up to reframe the Objector's objections. Have fun with this. If you've ever played Mad Libs when you were a kid, this is similar. The more fun you have the easier it will be to learn. Get silly and outrageous with it. If you're interested in mastering Sleight of Mouth patterns check this out!
