Feedback, feedforward. Ever find yourself engaging in some activity and suddenly you feel bad and you're not sure why? Or maybe you do know why. Something about whatever it was you were doing violated one of your morals or values. Instead of doing something else you stop doing whatever you're doing so you don't feel bad anymore, but instead of feeling better you continue to feel bad because you continue to think about what you just did. Sound familiar? This is what we call a feedback system in your experience. This is an important system because it keeps us in line with who we want to be and how we want to act. It can prevent us from doing things we know will violate our values or morals even before we do it. Over time we acquire enough life experience to know what behaviors align with our morals and values and what types of behavior don't align with who we want to be. When we do something that violates or doesn't align with our values and morals we feel bad. Why? Because of our commitment to those values and morals. When we deviate from them it doesn't feel good. Most of us have very good feedback systems. They work very well because in order to survive; parents, schools, society, and whatever authorities that surrounded you while you were growing up disciplined you when you stepped outside of the boundaries of what they believed was good for you and what was good for the system as a whole. Unfortunately, most of us don't have good feedforward systems because it's not something we're taught to develop like we're taught to cultivate feedback systems. There seems to be less emphasis on incentive and more emphasis on not doing what you're not supposed to do. Feed forward systems are systems that drive you forward into the future to behave and act according to your values and morals. When you do this you feel good and when you feel good you continue to act in accordance with your values and morals hence "feed forward". Most of us are more concerned with avoiding feeling bad more so than moving toward feeling good. The good news is you can change this. We're taught from a young age to reflect on what we did wrong when we're being reprimanded and rarely are we taught to think about three or more ways we could behave in the future that would align with our values and morals. More often we're taught to only look backward to correct and guide our behavior into the future, which can be problematic because focusing on what you're trying to avoid creates a feedforward system of avoidance. The feedback system is important and necessary, but it's also important to have a good feed forward system in order to create and achieve what you want rather than focusing only on what you want to avoid. A good feedforward system uses creativity to give you more options and more choice especially when you enter situations you've never been in before so that you can connect to the situation and engage and behave in a way that aligns with your values and morals. Get in touch with your values and cultivate and develop a good feedforward system by imagining multiple options to fulfill your values and you will make major advances in every area of your life. Any time you find yourself thinking about what you don't want or any time you're feeling bad because you did something you didn't want to do, ask yourself what you need to learn from this and then let it go. Immediately take that lesson and focus on three or more ways you can from this point forward act in the way you want to act and behave, in a way that aligns with your values. Give it a try!
