How do words affect your experience? What is Neuro-linguistic about the way you think? Everything. It's hard to say what creates what; does a word create thought or does thought create the word. Obviously we have thoughts before we can speak when we're babies but usually within the first year of being alive thoughts and words become enmeshed. We make generalizations in order to create shortcuts in our thinking. If we didn't, every time we learn something new it would be like starting from the very beginning of learning anything. Through generalizing we can relate understandings we already have to new things we're learning. For example, if I touch a stove and it burns me, I don't have to touch every stove in the world to know that stoves can burn me. I can generalize after the first time that I burn myself that all stoves have the potential to burn. Every word is a generalization. We have reference experiences for words like the word rain. References experiences are in my memory and could have only occurred in the past, but this doesn't stop me from relating the meaning of the word rain to various types of rain like heavy rain, drizzle, etc. I can also experience rain in a part of the world I've never been before and still call it rain. When it comes to getting what we want, words can trip you up or they can light the way. What images, sounds, voices, or feelings arise when you think of the words success? What about when you think about your personal success? When I think of general success, as in not my own, it looks sort of like a rap video with a yacht, car, money, homies, and women in bikinis. It's not even real to me. When I think of my own personal success a duality exists. I see bright and colorful images of me doing things I want to do, but what also exists in this frame is it's opposite, failure. When I think of the word success I invite the possibility of failure and this doesn't feel so good. The word success, for a lot of people, is loaded with too much emotion. Maybe you're not one of them. Maybe the word success excites you and doesn't invite fear of failure. What happens when you replace the word success with outcome? For me it takes a lot of the negative emotions out of it. It also doesn't seem so conclusive like success and failure. You can actually label yourself a "success" or a "failure" as if it's a part of your identity, which is not helpful and can be very hurtful. You would never label yourself an "outcome". The word outcome doesn't bind the results of the outcome to your identity so if you don't get the outcome you want, you change strategies and you try again. It's that simple. Not getting your outcome doesn't say really anything about who you are. It just means you need to read the feedback and try something different. When you're setting goals and planning, think in outcomes rather than success or failure. Try it on and let me know how it works for you.
