Stop what you're doing for a moment. This could be the most important question you're ever asked. Fill in the blank: "If I could overcome my fear of ___________ I would be able to____________." Be as specific as possible and email me your answers. The bigger the fear you can articulate the better. "If I could overcome my fear of failure I would be able to succeed," is way too vague. Fear of failing at what specifically and succeeding at what specifically? It's really important that you know specifically what your fears are if you're going to overcome them and it's important to know specifically what you want if you're going to ever get it. Most people only have a vague idea of what they're afraid of and only a vague idea of what they want. If I can offer you a solution I will or perhaps I'll do a video on the fear you're wanting to overcome. Don't worry I won't reveal your name. Your answers are confidential. Email them now!

Expanding Your Map of Reality What should you do with your relationship, your career, your life? Plenty of people have probably given you plenty of unsolicited advice about all of these. When you were a child you were told exactly what you "Should" and "Should not do", were you not? By the time we reach adulthood we're lacking personal experience and yet we have a lot of information that was told to us about what decisions and choices to make and what we "should" want and warned about what we "should not" want. Because our heads are filled with all of this information and we're lacking in experience we doubt what we truly want. We doubt our heart. If we take a chance on what we do want and we screw up or we fail all the "Shoulds" will beat us up and tell us "I told you so!" And we'll feel humiliated. The word should is what we call a Modal Operator in NLP. It comes from the Meta Model, the very first NLP Model. Words like should, need to, have to, ought to, must are examples of modal operators. When people use these words they're disconnecting from themselves and splitting themselves between playing the parent and the child. This is not a good place to make decisions from. You want to make decisions from a place of wholeness and connection with yourself and congruence. What should you do if you try something and you fail or it doesn't work out like you wanted? First of all know this is normal. How else are you supposed to know if something is right or not right for you if you don't try? It's important to get these experiences in order to truly understand what you want. When something doesn't work like you wanted, you've learned what not to do. This is great information. Perhaps you try again with a different strategy. Perhaps you realize whatever you tried is not for you and now you know that so you don't have to keep wondering about it. Or perhaps this experience makes you realize you want something completely different. You can't lose when you learn something! How else are you going to know what you truly want if you don't try? If you only stick to what others have told you, if you only stick to the shoulds, have tos, musts, need tos, and ought tos, you will have very limited experiences and unfulfilled potential and desires. This is what causes suffering. In my experience the suffering that comes from not fulfilling my potential and not fulfilling my desires and values is far greater than failing at something or something not working out like I wanted. To counter modal operators use "What if". When you find that you're parenting yourself with modal operators, flip this thinking by asking "What if I did that thing I shouldn't do?" or "What if I didn't do that thing I have to do?" "What would it be like if I didn't do that thing I need to do and instead I did___________?" Modal Operators indicate limitation. Train yourself to think in terms of possibility by asking "What if?"

WHAT'S YOUR PROBLEM? What do people want when they get into self-help and personal development? Many of us don't know for sure. We're not clear about what we want but we've come to a place in our lives where we know vaguely what we want like a better life and we know a happier existence is possible even if we're not unhappy. You feel your potential calling, but you don't know the first step or the right step to take. Perhaps you're afraid you're going to screw up. And yet the suffering you experience from not following your passion, not moving toward your potential, is reaching a breaking point. People might get into self-help and personal development by reading a book or attending a talk and suddenly they see new possibilities and new opportunities and it feels really good. You want more of this so you jump in but you soon get overwhelmed because you heard from someone that walking on hot coals is the way to go. Someone else said that EFT is the miracle practice. But you have a friend who's cousin said that she tried reiki and suddenly her business took off, she met the love of her life, and she dropped 25 pounds. You want to try everything and there's no shortage of free and useful information out there which will lead you to the workshop, the coaching, the bootcamp, or whatever that costs thousands and promises to change your life forever. And sometimes it does change your life forever and for the better. And sometimes you convince yourself that it did in order to justify the money you paid because there aren't any refunds. Does this sound like you? What does one do? This is why I like systems and structure. I turned to NLP because it has step by step processes and systems and it's about finding the structures in our experience that creates the experiences we don't want and the experiences we do want. But even still, NLP is such a broad and vast study it's easy to get overwhelmed by it. What part do you focus on first? How useful is eye accessing cues, the Meta Model, strategies, etc.? Does this sound like you? I will give you a short and unsatisfying answer, but the good news is that this is just the beginning of the conversation.
